ALM’s Legalweek New York is where lawyers and industry pundits share their views of important technology trends, and vendors come to announce new products. I attended Legalweek 2020 on Day Two, working in the Worldox booth and feeling the energy of the Exhibit Hall at the New York Hilton. Here is my report from LegalWeek 2020:
The exhibit hall was busy, no surprise as Legalweek, formerly LegalTech, has always been one of the most important legal technology shows. The hall prominently featured NetDocuments, LexisNexis, Clio, Worldox, and Tabs3, and many eDiscovery and AI vendors, but surprisingly LEAP and Centerbase practice management did not attend this year.
Visitors to the Worldox booth saw Web 3.0 with fast access from anywhere, now working directly with MS Office and other apps. The Email Agent automates saving of emails with Worldox folders; more on this shortly.
The tracks this year were LegalCIO, Legal Business Strategy, and the LegalTech conference and trade show. To obtain nuggets of good advice from Legalweek 2020, even if you were not able to attend, go to LegalWeek’s Perspectives page, where industry experts weighed in on these topics:
- Data Systems & Cybersecurity
- Document & Case Management
- eDiscovery
- Software
- Business of Law
The Day 2 keynote was given by Bettina Warburg, a blockchain researcher and entrepreneur. She noted that blockchain has a future in law, with some conditions, because if personally identifiable information (PII) of EU citizens is collected, it would fall under the General Data Protection Regulation’s (GDPR’s) scope. To remain GDPR compliant, blockchain pruning will be required, according to Warburg.
At the Worldox booth, Worldox Web 3.0 allows people outside the office to connect to Worldox documents, whether from laptops, tablets or smartphones. Users of PC laptops can connect to Worldox Web and open and save documents through MS Office and Adobe on their laptops. Each Worldox GX4 Professional license now automatically includes a license for Worldox Web. It seems likely that integration with cloud-based practice management is just around the corner.
The Worldox Email Agent reduces the chore of saving Outlook emails to Worldox, by connecting Outlook folders to Worldox clients and matters, with options to copy or to move emails to Worldox. The agent is a service that connects to 365 or a current version of Exchange. Worldox has to be on a recent version of GX4, and Outlook has to be a Microsoft-supported version.
